UvA and VU Amsterdam Launch AIMES to Boost AI Literacy in Education

The University of Amsterdam (UvA) and VU Amsterdam have launched the AI Maturity in Education Scan (AIMES), a tool to help educators integrate AI ethically and confidently, regardless of their current AI knowledge.
Luuk Terbeek, project lead, explains: “Educators often feel uncertain about how to approach AI in education. To prepare students for an AI-driven future, educators need the skills to use AI responsibly.” AIMES offers structured guidance through tailored surveys for teachers, programme directors, and faculty board members, providing actionable insights, personalized tips, and resources. It also supports strategic planning and aligns AI initiatives with institutional goals. Erdinç Saçan, teacher at Fontys University, adds: “AIMES helps teachers improve their AI literacy with self-assessments, resources, and tips.”
AIMES is based on the EU’s Trustworthy AI principles, updated regularly, and will include a student survey in June 2025. As an Open Educational Resource, it empowers institutions worldwide to democratize AI education and bridge the skills gap in an AI-driven world.
